Mayor Dolores Vantry unveiled the Underground Bicycle Highway on Monday, calling it "the most ambitious thing this city has attempted since the escalator."

The project, budgeted at 206 million, would run a climate-controlled cycling tunnel from Bellrow to Prosper Flats, with what the mayor described as "gentle, encouraging lighting."

Deputy Mayor Marcus Obeng, asked whether the figure included geotechnical contingency, said that it did, and then said it twice more, more slowly.

Transit director Desmond Quay declined to comment beyond noting that the ground beneath Bellrow is "older than our records of it."
